What is the Cost of the INS Citizenship Application?
The cost of the INS citizenship application is $595 and $85 must be paid along with that form filing fee as biometrics fee. Your fingerprints will be taken after you file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and for that purpose, you will have to pay the biometrics fee and that fee must be paid at the time of filing your INS citizenship application. Hence, the total fee that must accompany your naturalization application is $680. However, the biometrics fee does not apply to applicants above age 75.
Who Can File the INS Citizenship Application?
A permanent resident who wants to become a US citizen, can file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. However, Green Card holders can file this petition if they are above age 18 but they must have been living in the country for the past 5 years. Spouses of US citizens and Green Card holders in the military, need not wait for five long years and the spouses of US citizens can apply for US citizenship after three years of permanent residency and the members of the armed forces can apply for citizenship within one year.
Minors cannot file the US citizenship application and the applicant must be above age 18. He must be a Green Card holder and his Green Card must be valid at the time of filing Form N-400. Basic knowledge of the English language and history of the country, is mandatory. If the applicant had spent 30 months or more, in a foreign country within the last five years, he may not qualify for naturalization. Similarly, he must file his INS citizenship application in the American state in which he has been living for the past three months and he must be a decent person and must not have involved in criminal activities.
Eligible applicants, after completing their US citizenship applications must mail their petitions to the right lockbox facility along with $680, the form filing and the biometrics fee. It is mandatory to send the form filing fee along with the application as the petitions that do not accompany the fee will not be accepted and the petitions will be sent back to the applicants. The fee can be paid with a check or money order and the applicants must not send cash. The fee that they pay may not be refunded, even if their petitions are rejected or if they withdraw their applications. Likewise, military applicants need not pay the form filing fee and the seniors need not pay the biometrics fee.
Supporting documents play an important role and all the relevant immigration papers and copies of their permanent resident cards must be sent along with their citizenship applications. Two color photographs must also be sent. Applicants will be informed about the biometrics appointment only if their applications are complete and if the supporting documents are sufficient. Followed by that, they will be notified about their naturalization interviews and as a part of the US citizenship process, the applicants will have to take the US citizenship test. If everything goes well, they will be required to swear the Oath of Allegiance.
