Donald Trump’s 10 Point Immigration Plan

Donald Trump recently unveiled his ten-point immigration plan. Following are his 10 points.

  1. Wall between the U.S. and Mexico

Trump has always wanted to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. He also stresses that Mexico will pay for the wall. However, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto denies that and he recently tweeted that his country will not do that.

  1. End Catch and Release

Trump is against the Obama administration’s “catch and release” policy. He says that anyone arrested by law enforcement authorities for staying illegally in the U.S., would be detained until they are deported back to their countries.

  1. Zero tolerance for criminal aliens

Trump would focus on removing undocumented immigrants with criminal records. He would create a “deportation task force” to remove those with criminal records, those who have overstayed their nonimmigrant visas and those who are undocumented and are using public resources or benefits.

  1. Stop funding “sanctuary cities”

Trump would put an end to “sanctuary cities.” He would prevent cities from enacting policies to protect undocumented immigrants.

  1. Put an end to President Obama’s immigration actions

Trump would cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration policy that was implemented by President Obama. Under this program, around half a million undocumented youth who came here as children have received temporary protection from deportation. Apart from cancelling this program, he would also cancel the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans that President Obama announced in November 2014 and which is yet to be implemented. This program would give temporary immigration status to undocumented parents of U.S. citizens.

  1. Block immigration from some countries

He doesn’t want the U.S. to welcome immigrants from certain countries like Syria and Libya. He says that immigration from countries for which adequate immigration screening cannot occur, should be blocked.

  1. Make sure countries take back immigrants deported by the U.S.

He would force foreign countries to take back their citizens who the U.S. deports. Trump would deport undocumented immigrants including criminal immigrants. He wants foreign countries to take back all those immigrants.

  1. Complete the biometric entry-exit visa tracking system

Trump would complete the biometric entry-exit system that has been discussed for years but is not in place. This tracking system would help immigration authorities track visa overstays. He believes this tracking system will be more effective than a border wall. He said that the top priority for his administration would be removing visa overstays.

  1. Prevent undocumented immigrants from getting jobs by strengthening E-Verify

He doesn’t want undocumented immigrants to work here. He would strengthen the E-Verify system which will make it difficult for undocumented immigrants to get work in the U.S.

  1. Set new caps and limit legal immigration

Trump always wanted to curtail legal immigration. He wants the legal immigration system to be selective about who comes to the U.S. He wants to allow only the immigrants who are financially self-sufficient. He puts Americans first. He says that jobs must be offered to American workers first.
