Immigration Fact of the Week (November 21 – 27)

reasons for a naturalization application to be deniedWhat are few common reasons for a naturalization application to be denied?

Following are the most common reasons for denial of Form N-400, Application for Naturalization:

  • Fraud or misrepresentation before/after green card
  • Past criminal history
  • Lying in the naturalization application
  • Failure to pay taxes
  • Failure to pay child support
  • Unlawful presence in the U.S.
  • Submitting an incomplete N-400 application or failure to submit the required supporting documentation
  • Failure to meet the continuous residence and physical presence requirements
  • Failed the English and/or civics tests
  • Certain health-related grounds

The above are few common reasons for denial of the citizenship application. This doesn’t mean that you will never be able to apply for U.S. citizenship if your application is denied due to one of the above reasons. For example, if your application is denied because you failed to meet the residency requirements, you can apply for citizenship after you meet all the citizenship requirements. The best way to make sure your application is not denied is to fill out your application carefully and make sure your answers are true. If you have committed a crime, even if it is a minor one, it is wise to consult with an immigration attorney before filing your application for citizenship.
